Hello Jeff,

I have attached to this email a copy of our Arena Curling Starter Kit. This list of equipment provides you with what is needed to get curling running in your local hockey arena. You might not require all of the items, but you will need at the very least, stones and handles, freeze on hacks, brooms and sliders, pebble can with pebble heads and possibly the lines and rings that outline a sheet of curling ice. In most cases the arenas will put the lines and rings in when they are putting in their hockey lines. Depending on the arena some will fill the circles in and some will just leave the outline of the circles. If your arena decides to put the circles in they will need a circle cutter which is also on the list. As far as transforming the ice from hockey to curling, once the Zamboni has resurfaced the ice so that you are starting from fresh, you will need to freeze the hacks in, the hacks are on aluminum plates that you will set on the ice, put water around them and let them freeze on. Make sure they are secure as the players will be pushing from these as they deliver the stones. You will then need to use the pebble can with hot water (approx. 90-120 degrees) to spray the pebble onto the ice. It’s this pebble that allows the curling stones to slide down the ice so this part is extremely important. Once this is all completed you can curl. To remove the hacks you just pour some warm water on them to release them from the ice and then pull them up. Once the hacks are removed, the Zamboni can simply go over the surface again and you are back to hockey/skating ice. One thing that is important to remember is that the stones need to be the same temperature as the ice in order to work. If they are warmer they will be hard to throw and will stick to the ice. We recommend storing the stones on ice if possible and if not you need to let them cool overnight before you can use them.

If you have any questions about the starter kit please don’t hesitate to contact me, I hope I have provided you with a brief outline of what you will require. You can also go to the US Curling Association’s website to find more information on changing hockey ice to curling ice.

Looking forward to working with you to bring curling to your community,

Sincerely

Kimberly Tuck
